ABOUT BONSTRES

Taolan's first litter ever produced, BISS AM/CAN CH Taolan Flying Colours ROM, CAM.

He was born on October 11, 1982, sired by AM/CAN/BDA CH Kiskayo's Best ROM, out of AM/CAN CH Jay-Len's Taolan Tamisan ROM/CAM, bred by Ron Pohl. Bonstres (meaning, more or less, Baby Monster) was that uncommon creature, the product of a total outcross (no common ancestors at all within 12 generations), who turned out to be quite a productive sire. He has produced 18 American CH offspring so far, as well as a similar number of Canadian title holders, with others pointed. These include wins at the Best in Show, Working Group, and Specialty level.

His children, grandchildren, and descendants, include the 1995 AMCA National Specialty BOS and Winners Dog; the 1996 BISS winner and Winners DOG; Winners Dog, Winners Bitch, and BOS winners in 1997; all the major winners at the 1997 Canadian National Specialty, as well as many other specialty winners. A Bonstres grandson, Hemi, BISS AM/CAN CH TaolanQuest One Bad Cat, won the 2006 AMCC National Specialty BOB.  Bonstres is also the great grand sire of three time AMCA National Specialty BOB winner (2018, 2019, 2022) MBISS MBIS MBRIS MBISV MBBE CAN/AM GCHP TaolanQuest Flying Cloud. A major honor was winning the Stud Dog Class at the 1993 National Specialty.

Bonstres began his own show career in 1983 as a six month old puppy and finished his Canadian championship three shows later. His first weekend entered as a special also saw him win his first group placing not long after his first birthday. He earned his American championship with six consecutive wins, including several BOB wins, finishing with a group first from the classes. His first American show entered as a special saw him win his first specialty BOB, 1985.

He won the Canadian National twice. He was the first malamute to win the honor from the veteran class, and may still be the only dog to do that. He was never campaigned, even lightly, but still won often and large enough to be nationally ranked in both Canada and the USA. He was number one AMCC malamute in Canada in 1988. His success in the USA was directly attributable to Dick and Virginia Grefe.

Bonstres was never a flawless show dog, usually being too impatient to pose and preen for no apparent purpose. In spite of that, he used his powerful and correct movement to make a statement in the ring. He is shown in the Brooks Wallis Malamute book demonstrating "flawless side movement". He was as good from the front and the rear. Moving with efficiency and no wasted motion. His power and substance always caused onlookers to consider him a much larger dog, but in fact he stood 25 1/2 inches and weighed 92 pounds in his prime.

Bonstres was a proud and fiercely loyal dog to his owners. The closest thing to perfection in my life was taken away in August of 1995.
